1080 x 1080 pixels is the square size most often recommended for an Instagram feed post, and it works just as well for a Facebook post, a product tile in an online shop or a profile picture that will be shown in a circle. The shape is 1:1: as wide as it is tall. A square upload means the app does not have to pick a crop for you.
Open a photo or a whole set. The size boxes are already filled with 1080 x 1080, the preview shows the square you will get, and Download saves a file exactly 1080 pixels on each side, with -1080x1080 added to the name (holiday.jpg becomes holiday-1080x1080.jpg).
Almost no camera takes square pictures. A phone photo is 4:3 or 3:4 and a camera photo 3:2, so something has to give. The Mode switch decides what:
Crop to fill is the default and the usual choice for a feed post. The photo is scaled until it covers the square and whatever sticks out is cut away. In the preview the part that stays is lit and the rest is dimmed; drag the lit square, or tap the spot it should move to. On a portrait photo that usually means choosing between the head and the feet, on a landscape between the left and the right. In a batch every picture keeps its own crop, so select each thumbnail and place it.
Fit inside keeps the whole picture and fills the leftover bands with a colour. This is the one to use for product shots that must not lose an edge, for a wide panorama you want to show whole, or for artwork with text near the border. White is the common choice for shop listings and black suits dark photos; the picker gives any other colour, and Transparent leaves the bands empty (a JPG with a transparent background is saved as PNG, since JPG cannot store transparency).
Stretch forces the picture into the square without cutting or adding anything. A photo far from square will look squeezed, so it is only worth it for pictures that are nearly square already.
The + tile after the thumbnails adds more pictures; handy for a carousel of equal slides. They all get the same square and mode, each with its own crop position. With two or more, Download as gives one ZIP, separate images (on a phone that opens the share sheet, so they can go straight to your gallery) or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, a folder you pick.
A JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG and a WebP stays a WebP unless you choose another format in the menu beside Download; the Quality slider sets JPG and WebP quality. Shrinking uses Lanczos resampling, which keeps fine detail like hair and text crisp at 1080 pixels, and phone photos are turned the right way up first. A file that is already 1080 x 1080 in the chosen format comes back untouched.
Need a different size? Type any width and height into the boxes, or open a page made for it: 1080x1350 for a taller portrait post, 1080x1920 for Stories and Reels, 1200x1200 or 2048x2048 for larger squares, and 400x400 for a small avatar. To resize by percentage or keep each photo's own shape, use Batch Resize.
Switch the mode to Fit inside. The whole photo is placed in the square and the empty space around it is filled with white, black, a colour of your choice or left transparent.
It is the square size most commonly recommended for feed posts. Instagram also accepts other sizes and shapes, and its own recommendations change from time to time, but a 1080 x 1080 square is a safe choice for a square post.
The profile grid may show posts in a different shape from the feed, so the edges of a square can be trimmed in the grid view. Keeping the main subject near the middle means it survives either way.
Yes, it is enlarged to fill the square. Enlarging cannot invent detail the original never had, so a tiny image will look soft.
No. The resizing happens inside your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
