Square Product Photos at 2048x2048

2048 x 2048 pixels is a large 1:1 square, and it is the size commonly recommended for square product photos in online stores, Shopify among them. At this size a shop can show a crisp picture on a big screen and still has enough pixels for a zoom view, where a shopper looks closely at stitching, texture or a label. Keeping every product at the same square size also makes collection pages line up in a clean grid instead of a ragged row of different shapes.

Open one photo or the whole shoot. The size boxes already read 2048 x 2048 and the preview shows the finished square. Download saves each picture exactly 2048 pixels on both sides, named after the original with -2048x2048 added, so mug.jpg becomes mug-2048x2048.jpg and you can still tell which file is which.

Fit Inside, Crop to Fill or Stretch

Product photos rarely come out square, and the right fix depends on the product. The Mode switch offers three.

Fit inside is usually the one for a shop. The whole item stays in the frame and the empty bands beside or above it are filled with a background. White is the familiar product-page look; black, any colour from the picker and transparent are there too. Transparent needs a format that can store it, so a JPG given a transparent background is saved as a PNG. If your photos were taken on a white sweep, a white fill blends straight into it.

Crop to fill scales the photo until it covers the square and trims the rest. It suits lifestyle shots, fabric close-ups and anything where filling the frame matters more than showing every edge. The preview shows the whole photo with the kept square lit and the trimmed parts dimmed; drag the lit square, or tap where it should go, to choose what stays. Every picture in a batch keeps its own crop, so pick a thumbnail to set that one.

Stretch pulls the picture into the square with nothing cut and nothing added. It distorts the product, which shoppers notice, so use it only for pictures that are already almost square.

A Whole Catalogue in One Go

Add as many photos as you need with the + tile after the thumbnails. With two or more, Download as offers one ZIP, separate images (the share sheet on a phone) or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, a folder you choose, where every file is written directly, handy when you are preparing a full product upload.

Formats are kept by default: JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG, WebP stays WebP. The menu beside Download converts the lot to JPG, PNG or WebP, and the Quality slider sets JPG and WebP quality. Resizing uses a Lanczos filter, which keeps edges and fine texture sharp when a large camera file is brought down to 2048 pixels, and phone photos are turned upright before anything is measured. A file that is already 2048 x 2048 in the chosen format is returned untouched.

Need another square? Type a size into the boxes or open a page made for it: 1000x1000 for a smaller product square, 1200x1200, 1080x1080 for social posts, or 600x600 for thumbnails. To resize by percentage or keep each photo's shape, use Batch Resize; for one picture with every option, Resize Image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use 2048x2048 for product photos?

It is large enough for a sharp zoom view and for big screens, and it is the square size many store platforms and themes commonly recommend. Check your own platform's current guidance, since recommendations change.

How do I put a product on a white square background?

Choose Fit inside and leave the background on White. The whole product stays visible, centred in the 2048 x 2048 square, with white filling the space around it.

My photo is smaller than 2048 pixels. What happens?

It is enlarged to fill the square, because the output is always exactly 2048 x 2048. Enlarging cannot add detail the camera never caught, so a small photo will look softer when a shopper zooms in. Starting from the original camera file gives the best result.

Do my product photos leave my computer?

No. The resizing runs in your browser on your own device, and no picture is uploaded to a server, so unreleased products stay private.
