Make Any Photo a 1200x1200 Square

1200 x 1200 pixels is a large square in the 1:1 shape. It is a common size for square social media posts, for product images in online shops and catalogues, and for any page that shows pictures in a tidy grid of equal tiles. It is big enough to look sharp on a phone held close or on a wide desktop screen, yet small enough to load quickly, which is why many templates and store themes simply ask for "1200 x 1200".

Open one picture or a whole folder of them. The size boxes already read 1200 x 1200 and the preview shows the square you will get. Download saves a file exactly 1200 pixels on each side, named after the original with -1200x1200 added: holiday.jpg becomes holiday-1200x1200.jpg.

Which Mode Suits a Square

Almost no camera takes square photos, so something has to give. A 4:3 phone photo is a third wider than it is tall, a 3:2 camera photo half again as wide, and a portrait shot is taller than it is wide. The Mode switch decides what happens to the difference.

Crop to fill is the default and the usual choice for social posts. The photo is scaled until it covers the whole square and the extra width or height is trimmed. The preview shows the full photo with the kept square lit and the rest dimmed; drag the lit square, or tap where it should sit, to keep the face, the dish or the building you care about. In a batch every picture remembers its own crop, so pick each thumbnail and place it.

Fit inside is the better choice for product images. The whole item stays in view and the empty bands at the sides or top and bottom are filled with a background: white, which most shops use, black, any colour from the picker, or transparent. A JPG cannot hold transparency, so a JPG given a transparent background is saved as a PNG.

Stretch forces the picture into the square without cutting or adding anything. Round things turn oval and faces widen, so keep it for pictures that are already nearly square.

Batches, Formats and File Names

Add more pictures with the + tile after the thumbnails; they all get the same size and mode. With two or more, Download as gives you one ZIP, separate images (the share sheet on a phone) or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, a folder you choose where the files are written directly.

Each file keeps its format unless you change it: JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG, WebP stays WebP. The menu beside Download converts everything to JPG, PNG or WebP, and the Quality slider sets how JPG and WebP are compressed. The resizing uses a Lanczos filter, so fine detail such as fabric texture or small print on a label stays crisp, and phone photos are turned upright from their EXIF orientation first. A file that is already 1200 x 1200 in the format you picked comes back untouched.

Need a different square or shape? Type any width and height into the boxes, or open a page made for it: 1080x1080 for Instagram-style posts, 2048x2048 or 1000x1000 for store product photos, 600x600 for thumbnails, or 1200x630 for link previews. To shrink by percentage or keep each photo's own shape, use Batch Resize.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a rectangular photo square without cutting it?

Switch the mode to Fit inside. The whole photo is placed in the 1200 x 1200 square and the leftover bands are filled with the background you pick, white for a clean shop look or a colour that matches your brand.

What aspect ratio is 1200x1200?

1:1, a perfect square. 1080 x 1080, 1000 x 1000, 2048 x 2048 and every other square share that shape, so a crop you choose here will look the same at any of those sizes.

My photo is only 800 pixels wide. Will it still work?

Yes, the output is always exactly 1200 x 1200, so a smaller picture is enlarged to fill it. Enlarging cannot invent detail that was never captured, so a small photo will look a little softer than one that started bigger.

Are my photos sent anywhere?

No. Your browser opens, resizes and saves every picture on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, so product shots and private photos never leave your computer or phone.
