What 1280x720 Is For

1280 x 720 pixels is HD, usually called 720p: the smallest of the common widescreen video sizes, in the 16:9 shape shared by 1080p and 4K. It is also the size YouTube recommends for custom video thumbnails.

Resize a picture to 1280 x 720 when you need a YouTube thumbnail, a still frame for a 720p video, a title card or a slide for a small screen, or a widescreen image that loads quickly on a website. Open the file and Download returns a picture that is exactly 1280 pixels wide and 720 pixels high.

Getting a Photo Into 16:9

A thumbnail or video frame has no room for a different shape. A phone photo (4:3, or 3:4 held upright) and a camera photo (3:2) are both taller than 16:9, so something has to give. The Mode switch picks what:

Crop to fill, the default, scales the picture to cover the whole frame and trims what sticks out. The preview shows the full photo with the kept part lit and the rest dimmed; drag the lit window, or tap a spot, to keep what matters. For a thumbnail, keep the face or the main object large and clear of the lower right corner, where YouTube places the video length.

Fit inside keeps the whole picture and fills the leftover strips with white, black, a colour from the picker, or transparent. It is handy for a portrait photo or a logo that must not be cut; a bold colour behind it can look deliberate rather than empty. Transparent needs PNG or WebP, so a JPG with a transparent background is saved as a PNG.

Stretch pulls the image to exactly 1280 x 720 without cutting. Use it only for pictures that are already close to 16:9, such as a screenshot of a widescreen video, or faces will look wide.

Thumbnails in a Batch

Making thumbnails for a whole series? Open every picture at once, or add more with the + tile after the thumbnails in the panel. All of them get the same size and mode, and each keeps its own crop; tap one to set its position. With two or more files, Download as offers one ZIP, separate images (the share sheet on a phone), or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, a folder of your choice where the files are written directly.

JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG and WebP stays WebP unless you pick another format in the menu beside Download; the Quality slider sets JPG and WebP quality, and a JPG is the usual choice for a thumbnail. Each file is named after the original with -1280x720 added, so episode-3.png becomes episode-3-1280x720.png. Large photos are scaled down with a Lanczos filter, so text and edges stay crisp, and phone photos are turned upright first. A picture that is already 1280 x 720 in the chosen format is returned as it was, and a smaller one is enlarged to fill the frame, which cannot add detail.

Need a different size? Type your own width and height, or open a page made for it: 1920x1080 for Full HD, 2560x1440 for QHD, 1200x630 for link previews, or 1080x1920 for Shorts and stories. For a whole folder at a percentage, use Batch Resize.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 1280 x 720 pixels in the 16:9 shape. This page gives you exactly that; check YouTube's own help page for its current file rules before uploading.

What aspect ratio is 1280x720?

16:9, the same as 1920 x 1080 and 3840 x 2160. A picture cropped for 720p also fits those sizes without another cut.

Can I make a 1280x720 thumbnail from a vertical phone photo?

Yes. With Crop to fill you keep a wide band of the photo, so drag it to the face or subject. With Fit inside you keep the whole photo and get coloured strips at the sides.

Is my thumbnail uploaded while I resize it?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and the picture never leaves your device.
