The 1280x1024 Screen Size

1280 x 1024 pixels is SXGA, the native resolution of most 17-inch and 19-inch flat monitors from before widescreens took over. Those square-looking screens are still on many office desks, in shops, labs, control rooms and point-of-sale stations, and on plenty of older PCs at home. The shape is 5:4, a little squarer than the 4:3 of older monitors and nothing like the 16:9 of today's screens.

A wallpaper, login background or kiosk image that fits such a screen exactly has to be 1280 x 1024. Anything else is stretched, squeezed or boxed in by the system. Open a picture here and Download returns one that is exactly 1280 pixels wide and 1024 pixels high.

Which Mode Suits a 5:4 Screen

The Mode switch decides how a picture of another shape becomes 5:4.

Crop to fill is the default. The picture is scaled to cover the frame and the edges that do not fit are trimmed. From a 4:3 phone or compact camera photo, only a thin slice comes off the sides; from a 3:2 camera photo, a bit more; from a 16:9 wallpaper, a good part of the width. The preview lights the part that stays and dims the rest, so drag the lit window, or tap where it should go, to keep the subject centred or off to one side as you like.

Fit inside keeps the whole picture. A widescreen wallpaper fits across the full width with strips above and below, filled with white, black, a colour from the picker, or transparent. That is often the better choice for a company logo on a plain colour or a chart that must stay whole. A JPG with a transparent background is saved as a PNG.

Stretch fills 1280 x 1024 without cutting. A 4:3 picture is close enough in shape that stretching barely shows; a 16:9 picture would look visibly squeezed.

Setting Up Many Screens

If you are preparing backgrounds for several machines or a rotating set of images, open all the pictures at once or add more with the + tile after the thumbnails. They share the size and mode, and each keeps its own crop; tap a thumbnail to adjust it. With two or more, Download as offers a ZIP, separate images (the share sheet on a phone), or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, a folder you choose where the files are written directly.

Formats are kept (JPG, PNG and WebP stay as they are) unless you pick JPG, PNG or WebP in the menu beside Download; the Quality slider sets JPG and WebP quality. Each file is named after the original with -1280x1024 added, so logo.png becomes logo-1280x1024.png. Large photos are scaled down with a Lanczos filter, phone photos are turned upright first, and a file already 1280 x 1024 in the chosen format comes back untouched. A smaller picture is enlarged to fill the screen, which cannot add detail.

Need a different size? Type your own width and height, or open a page made for it: 1024x768 for 4:3 screens, 800x600 for small 4:3 images, 1920x1080 for widescreen Full HD, or 2560x1440 for QHD. To shrink a folder by percentage, use Batch Resize.

Frequently Asked Questions

What aspect ratio is 1280x1024?

5:4. It divides down evenly: 1280 and 1024 are both multiples of 256, giving 5 by 4. It is squarer than 4:3 and much squarer than 16:9.

Can I use a 1024x768 picture on a 1280x1024 screen?

The shapes differ slightly (4:3 against 5:4), so resize it here: Crop to fill trims a thin strip from the sides, and the picture is enlarged to 1280 x 1024. Enlarging cannot add detail, so it will be a little softer.

How do I turn a widescreen wallpaper into 1280x1024?

Keep Crop to fill and drag the lit window to the part of the wallpaper you want, since a good share of the width will be cut. If nothing may go, use Fit inside and pick a background colour for the strips above and below.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The pictures are resized in your browser and never leave your computer.
