Turn Any Photo Into a 1500x500 Header

1500 x 500 pixels is the size commonly recommended for the header image across the top of an X (formerly Twitter) profile. Its shape is 3:1, three times as wide as it is tall: a long, low banner behind your profile picture and name. Uploading a picture that is already 1500 x 500 means you decide what shows, instead of the site's crop tool doing it for you.

Open a photo, or a few to compare. The size boxes are set to 1500 x 500, the preview shows the banner, and Download saves an image exactly 1500 pixels wide and 500 high, named after the original with -1500x500 added (holiday.jpg becomes holiday-1500x500.jpg).

Picking the Right Strip

A 3:1 banner is much wider than a photo. From a 4:3 phone photo it keeps a strip a little under half the photo's height; from a vertical photo, only a thin slice. So the question is always which strip to keep, and the Mode switch sets how:

Crop to fill, the default, is what most headers need. The photo is scaled to the full banner width and everything above and below the strip is cut away. The preview shows the whole photo with the strip lit and the rest dimmed; drag the strip up or down, or tap where it should go, to keep a skyline, a row of mountains, a team lined up, or the middle of your artwork. If you are trying several pictures, each thumbnail keeps its own strip position.

Fit inside keeps the whole picture and fills the space on either side with white, black, any colour from the picker, or transparency. It suits a logo, a wordmark or a square graphic that must appear whole: a logo on a matching brand colour makes a tidy header. A JPG with a transparent background is saved as PNG.

Stretch forces the picture to 1500 x 500 without cutting. A normal photo becomes three times too wide, so this only makes sense for a picture that is nearly 3:1 already, such as a panorama.

What Covers the Header

Your profile picture sits over the lower left of the header, and on phones and narrow windows the banner can be shown with its top and bottom trimmed a little. Keep text and faces in the centre band and away from the lower left corner, and they stay visible on every screen.

Formats, Batches and Names

Files keep their format - a JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG, a WebP stays a WebP - unless you pick another in the menu beside Download, where the Quality slider sets JPG and WebP quality. The + tile after the thumbnails adds more pictures; with two or more, Download as gives a ZIP, separate images (the share sheet on a phone) or, in Chrome and Edge on a computer, a folder you choose. Resizing uses Lanczos resampling, phone photos are turned upright first, and a file already 1500 x 500 in the asked format is handed back as it was.

Need a different size? Type it in, or open 1584x396 for a LinkedIn banner, 1200x630 for a link preview image, 400x400 for a profile picture, or 1920x1080 for a Full HD frame. For one picture with every option, use Resize Image.

Frequently Asked Questions

What aspect ratio is 1500x500?

3:1. Divide both sides by 500 and you get 3 and 1: the banner is exactly three times as wide as it is tall.

How do I fit a whole logo into an X header without cropping it?

Choose Fit inside and pick a background colour, ideally one that matches the logo's own background. The logo is kept whole in the middle and the sides are filled with that colour.

Can I make a smaller picture into a 1500x500 header?

Yes, it is enlarged to fill the banner. Enlarging cannot add detail, so a small photo will look soft across the full width; start from the largest version you have.

Is my photo uploaded here?

No. Your browser does the resizing on your own device, and the picture is only uploaded when you put it on your profile yourself.
